Finland Ice Marathon newsletter 1 2012

The ice on the lake Kallavesi thickens every moment and despite the warm weather during the first part of winter it starts to look more and more likely that we have a good ice track for Finland Ice Marathon 2012. The Finland Ice Marathon organization is getting ready towards arranging the best Finland Ice Marathon event ever. The track is designed to be 12,5 km long and service points, competition office at hotel Scandic will be ready for participants on 22nd February. Last three years we have had bad luck with the extreme weather conditions, but by moving our event one week later on the calendar we are confident that this year we have a chance to skate in perfect conditions.

Finland Ice Marathon starts traditionally with skating days for school children on Wednesday and Thursday 22-23th February. There will be nearly seven thousand youngsters and kids having fun on the ice. So you can say that Finland Ice Marathon also works as display window of skating world for thousands of kids in Kuopio area.

Friday 24th February Kuopio Passenger Harbour and 2 km skating route converts into a winter wonderland with lumberjack candles lighting the dark winter night. At the Moonlight skating night you can enjoy skating shows and music. You can also get refreshments from selling booths and two ships that work as a bar and a café as the night continues with an ice disco with a good DJ.

The actual Finland Ice Marathon race day takes place on Saturday 25th February. The bravest skaters start their 200 km journey at 7 o’clock. The other events are 100 km, 50 km 50 km and 12,5 km skating. Ski pole skating is arranged on the distances of 50, 25 and 12, 5 km. One of the specialities in Finland Ice Marathon is the Kicksled race of 100 km held also on Saturday. The race day night continues in hotel Puijonsarvi at Puikkari nightclub at 20.00 where we have price giving ceremony for competitive events. This skaters night is a nice opportunity for all skaters to relax and go trough the days event with other colleagues.

This years Finland Ice Marathon continues on Sunday with skitouring event Puijon Laturetki from Hotel Scandic. In Puijon Laturetki you can ski 23, 33, or 53 km in beautiful scenery of Lake Kallavesi and Kuopio skitracks. For further information www.puijonlaturetki.com.
