Finland Ice Marathon newsletter 2 2012
Lots of international colour in Finland Ice Marathon
The ice track for Finland Ice Marathon gets longer every day and the weather forecast promises great weather conditions for the race day. Week before zero our we have 4 km of skating track, and 3,5 km more waits to be planed for skaters. The “Ice Master” promises 7,5 km track for the race day. As the low ice thickness this year seems to destroy the hopes for full length 12,5 km track, there will be slight changes for the race distances and on the timetable. All possible changes will be informed on our website, when the situation clarifies in the beginning of the race week.
Participants list starts to fill up whilst many local skaters are still waiting for the forecast of the race day. So far there are participants from thirteen different nationalities registered. The utmost visitors are from Southern Africa and China, but the traditional skating countries such as Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Russia are well represented. Finnish Championship races on marathon skating are also held at the race, but the greatest part of participants are simply skating for motion and fun and the great scenery.
There are three thousand children and youngsters listed for both days at the skating event for school children on Wednesday and Thursday 22-23rd. On Friday 24th Moonlight skating night gathers everyone to skate on lumberjack candle –lid 2 km ice track and enjoy the Ice Disco. The weather forecast for the actual race day on Saturday 25th promises dry weather and temperatures slightly under zero Celsius. Saturday will definitely be a great skating day. There’s also Minimarathon event for children and lots of activities also for spectators to enjoy at the Kuopio Passanger Harbour.
